Pianist Ah Ruem Ahn recently won the 2012 Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition. On Thursday, Jan. 31, she makes her American debut at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall.

Ahn was born in Suwon, South Korea, and studied music at the Yonsei University in Seoul. Before winning the top prize at the 17th Santander Competition, Ahn placed at the Schubert International Piano Competition in Dortmund, the Morocco (Rabat) Philharmonic Competition, the Hindemith Competition in Berlin, and the Klavierpodium der Jugend in Munich, among others.

We introduce her tonight with excerpts from her auditions at the Santander competition in Spain. Serving as a coda to the Ahn preview is Copland’s Appalachian Spring, in a fine performance by the students of the Manhattan School of Music Symphony, under guest conductor Philippe Entremont.

Program details:

Schubert: Impromptus, Op. 142: No. 3 in B-flat, No. 4 in F Minor

— Ah Ruem Ahn, piano. Recorded live at the Paloma O'Shea Santander International Piano Competition.
