Jazz pianist and pedagoge Mulgrew Miller died Wednesday of a stroke in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He was 57 years old.

Miller left a big mark on the careers of others: As a well-traveled sideman, Miller worked with singer Betty Carter, drummer Art Blakey, trumpeter Woody Shaw, and drummer Tony Williams and countless others. He mentored young musicians as the director of jazz studies at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J.

Miller also performed with bassist Ron Carter in his Golden Striker Trio -- a group that played in the Soundcheck studio in 2011. Soundcheck pays tribute to Miller by listening back to that session.
